SHAKIRA LEARNS SOCCER FOR WORLD CUP SING-SONG

Colombian singer SHAKIRA is racing against time to learn the rules of soccer ahead of her performance at this year's (06) World Cup in Germany.

The singer has been asked to perform her new hit MY HIPS DON'T LIE before the

championship final on 9 July at Berlin's Olympic Stadium but admits she has no understanding of the game.

She says, "I have no idea what a penalty is, but I'm going to learn because I understand the feeling football generates. "It's similar to a feeling of adoration in these modern times and the passions that awake people."
Air Deccan to expand operations in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: No-frills carrier Air Deccan proposes to expand operations by flying into more cities within the State as well as linking it with the other States of the country.

According to Chief Revenue Officer, John Kuruvilla, the State Capital would be made a major hub of Air Deccan operations in the coming days.

Kuruvilla said this while briefing newspersons after the launch of the airline's seventh air base at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport here last week.

He said that while tourism has contributed heavily to the growth of the State's economy, the low-cost air connectivity would help further consolidate growth prospects thanks to its multiplier effect on tourism traffic.

Tie up with hotels

As part of promoting the State as a favoured destination among domestic tourists, Air Deccan will tie up with six to seven hotels in Thiruvananthapuram with a view to introducing holiday packages.

The first aircraft to be based in Thiruvananthapuram is a brand new 180-seater Airbus A-320.

The airline has also started operating in two new sectors, namely Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi via Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai via Kochi.

Daily flight

The DN-718 daily flight will leave Thiruvananthapuram at 6.50 a.m. to reach Chennai at 7.55 a.m.

It will take off from Chennai at 8.25 a.m. to reach New Delhi at 11.05 a.m.

In the reverse direction, the flight will leave New Delhi at 12 noon to reach Chennai at 2.30 p.m., from where it will fly onward to Thiruvananthapuram at 3.05 p.m. to touch down there at 4.10 p.m.

June date for Deccan flight

Jamshedpur, May 9, 2006: Air Deccan is understood to have assured the state government that commercial operations linking the two business hubs of Calcutta and Jamshedpur would begin from next month.

A team of Air Deccan officials met the chief minister Arjun Munda at his Ranchi residence this morning and discussed the issue.

State industry secretary Santosh Kumar Satpathy was also present in the deliberations.

" It will be a 48-seater aircraft and the details of the flight operations will be decided later by the aviation company. It would be a boon for the people of the steel city, especially the business community, as they can now look forward to reaching Calcutta spending much less time in travel," Satpathy said.

At present Air Deccan is plying aircraft in the Calcutta-Ranchi-Raipur route. " The airport at Sonari belongs to the Tatas. Air Deccan has to take the permission of the steel major and the director-general of civil aviation (DGCA) for starting commercial operations," sources said.

Deputy managing director (corporate services) of Tata Steel, A.N. Singh, said that Air Deccan is in touch with the company to start commercial operations.

A team of DGCA will be making an inspection of the airport to see whether it would be feasible for commercial flights, he added.

Summer baby for Britney

Britney Spears is reportedly due to give birth to her second child in August. The baby is due less than one year after the birth of her first child Sean Preston.

Access Hollywood quoted a source 'close to the family' as saying the singer is five months pregnant. The magazine reports that Britney was seen by the pool at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas at the weekend sporting a red bikini and a 'serious bump'.
